For our third and final adventure this month, we headed up to Bear Lake with Ammon's family. We do our best to get together every year at the end of the summer, and this year we needed some sunshine and beach! The grandparents rented a house up on the hill with an amazing view of the lake, kids played a round of Twister, and we all got settled in.
The first night we we ordered this HUGE pizza from Bear Lake Pizza, then went to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Pickleville Playhouse. It was done really well for a summer stock show--small stage and doubled up actors, but they were very good. We took the older kids (Audrey and Josh) with us and they were just enamored with the music and scenery. Oh, and the popcorn. Mostly the popcorn.
However, trying to get Nathan to sleep the first night was a nightmare. Usually at home he stays in his room, but there were not enough rooms to put him in one by himself. So he was up wandering and crying half the night and would NOT. STOP. TALKING. Oy. Ammon had to go sleep with him in one bed and I was in another just to get him calmed down. I think he finally fell asleep sometime after 1 a.m.
The next morning we drove up into Idaho to tour Minnetonka Cave. First of all, it was cold! Second, there was a total of 888 steps on the entire tour -- slick and wet. A little nerve-wracking with little kids about. Audrey and Grandma turned back halfway through because it was just too much. I got some shots of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, plus we saw a few bats flying around.
We drove back to the house after the tour, but not before stopping to get Famous Bear Lake Raspberry Shakes. Ohh, so yummy, and SO worth the calories! I don't know how they do it, but they're awesome every time.
The cave wore most of us out (well, I took a nap anyway) so we hung around the house for the rest of the day. Grandma and Grandpa had bought a cardboard playhouse for the kids to decorate, so they were happy enough to play with that. Besides, we had to save up our energy for the next day...
BEACH! Unfortunately this year most of the beaches were completely underwater due to the high amount of water during the spring runoff. Awesome for the drought cycle, not so much for beach time. There was really only one decent beach this time, and that was North Beach up on the Idaho side of the lake. Well, nothing was going to keep us from going, so off we went and found ourselves a little nook among all the other beach goers. It was still early enough in the day that the sun wasn't blazing hot, but all the shady spots had been spoken for by the time we got there. We made the best of it with some umbrellas and blankets.
The water was COLD at first but felt great after a few minutes. We took the kids out on the floaties and looked for decent sand for castles. Nathan was perfectly content to throw rocks in the water. When they took a break, some of the adults headed out deeper into the water for a fun game of water frisbee. My adoring husband tried to dunk me several times, but I prevailed. My hat, however, succumbed to the water.
After a few hours, we were all tired and hot. We squished ourselves back into the car and headed for the house. Nathan and Aunt Sarah were asleep in minutes.
We did a marshmallow cookout after grilled steaks for dinner. Grandma and Grandpa bought the HUGE roasting marshmallows and the kids were all over that. One got dropped and it ended up being a makeshift baseball. And as witnessed from our previous campout, Ammon is a master at roasting marshmallows to perfection.
That night a thunderstorm started rolling in our way, but we weren't even aware of it until the wee hours of the morning when it started shaking the house and setting off the smoke detectors (sensitive little buggers!) I had taken the bed next to Audrey while Nathan was sleeping downstairs on the king bed with Ammon (finally got him to sleep better that way) so I had to calm her down when the thunder shook the house with a loud CRACK.
The rain came down in sheets just as we were packing up the car to come home. It let up a little as we drove through the canyon, and by the time we reached Logan, it had stopped. We hit up a few of our favorite places in town (yep, still miss it) and stocked up on some goodies from Gossners.
So there is our recap of our adventurous August. It felt strange to be so busy because we are very much homebodies. But to be honest, I'm all about making fun memories with my family. I love hearing the kids ask when we'll be going camping again, and back to Lagoon and Bear Lake. It may be a while before we do it all again, but it was well worth it.

SO FUN!!! Looks like a blast and you look FANTASTIC! We were sad about the beaches, but oh well...it's easy to find fun stuff to do regardless. Glad you had a good time. :)
Looks like you guys had a TON of fun! Well, except for the no sleeping and the thunder. :) Great memories!
