Don't use the rhyme "open your mouth and close your eyes, and you will get a nice surprise!" to get your toddler to take a bite of food. Said toddler will expect a surprise after gagging down the spoonful.
I thought the surprise was the bite of food, but that's not what she thought. Through sniffles and tears, she managed a "where's my surprise, mommy?"
